Choosing the right grade of plywood for projects can be a hassle as there are plethora of options available in the market. While choosing the variant one should first decide what is the main purpose of the plywood, there are three variants available in the market, namely:

• Moisture Resistant (MR)/ Commercial Grade: MR grade plywoods are made using wood veneers pressed against each other using “Melamine” based glue known as “Melamine Urea Formaldehyde”. This variant of plywood is generally used in dry areas and internal use such as living room, bedroom and similar areas.

• Boiling Water Resistance (BWR): BWR grade plywoods are made using wood veneers pressed against each other using “Phenol” based glue known as “Phenol Formaldehyde”. This variant of plywood provides marginally higher protection against water and are boiling waterproof up to 48 hrs. Recommended usage of these plywoods are damp areas such as kitchen and bathrooms, preferably upper cabinets and areas in moderate contact with water.

• Boiling Water Proof (BWP)/ Marine Grade: BWP grade plywoods are made using wood veneers pressed against each other using “Resorption Phenol Formaldehyde”. This variant of plywood provides maximum protection against moisture resulting in out and out waterproof solution for wood working. A good BWP grade plywood comes with a minimum 72 Hrs protection against boiling water. This plywood can be used in all exterior usage such as bathroom, kitchens, ship building etc.There are other variants of plywoods available in the market also but they all fall largely into the category mentioned above.

Kitchen and bathroom are the areas which comes in maximum contact with the water. You should only choose a good Boiling Water Proof Plywood (BWP) for these areas. However, you can also choose Boiling Water-Resistant Plywood (BWR) for the upper cabinets.

• Density: The density of a MR Grade plywood should be minimum 650 KG/M^3 and in case of BWP plywood it should be 750 KG/M^3
• Moisture: The moisture content of any good plywood should be within the range 5-15%
• Thickness Tolerance: The thickness tolerance of any good plywood is +/- 0.5mm
• Certificates: All the genuine plywood comes along with test certificates, you can ask for one from the dealer. Also, you can check the CML number of the plywood mentioned under the ISI seal

Neem is a very good choice of timber, but it’s not available all the year round. Most of the plywood selling in the name of neem do not have neem inside. To make sure you buy the right plywood do ensure the density is above 650 Kg/m^3 and the glue lines are well treated to protect with any kind of termites, borer and other timber affecting organisms.

Plywood comes with an inherent limitation of undulations. To ensure there are no undulations and the thickness is uniform throughout the sheet the plywoods are made with a process to make sure the undulations are done away with and the thickness tolerance is reduced to +/- 0.2mm.
